What Volunteering At The Ferndale Food Bank Has Meant To Me
Sharon M. Robinson
I wanted to do something that would make a difference in our community, so I started volunteering at the Food Bank 17 years ago, and how the time goes by, it seems like just yesterday.
Over the last 17 years the exposure we are receiving from the newspapers have informed families in need where to come for help.
In 1993 the Food Bank was serving 120 families & approximately 300 people.
Now, in 2008, we are serving over 500 families and approx. 2700 people in those families per month.
The families are able to come and choose from foods on our request list, depending on their families needs. They are able to come once a week or 3 times a month with exceptions if needed. Each family gets approximately 30-50 lbs. of food which includes bakery & produce. On the last Thursday of the month we have Commodities. This is a government program where families can come for a fixed amount of food depending on their families needs. The amount will vary from 20-35 lbs. depending on produce, bread, and pastries.
As you can see why I Volunteer
